Introduction
The Advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education: An action plan for Queensland was launched on 30 October 2019. Over the past year, the action plan has focused and enhanced the Department of Education's efforts to reframe its relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and achieve excellence for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students.
This progress report provides information on implementation of the action plan across its 5 priority areas:
- Making a great start
- Reaching learning potential
- Equipped for the future
- Building capability
- Engaging partners.
This year has been like no other from an education perspective. The department's response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the flexibility, collaboration and goodwill of educators to support all learners in unfamiliar and challenging circumstances. While not initially considered in the action plan, this progress report also includes information on actions taken to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students during COVID-19.
Much has been achieved over the past year, but there is more to be done in each of the areas covered by the action plan. The department will continue to monitor progress on key indicators, supplement and tailor its activities as circumstances change and strengthen engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, communities, children, students and families.
Engaging families and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children's access and participation in early childhood education.
Enabling every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student to succeed, reach their full potential and achieve academic success.
Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to complete Year 12 and transition to post-school pathways.
Supporting our staff and systems to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students.
Partnering with key stakeholders to improve outcomes and deliver better services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students.
Provides the status of each action at the end of 2020.
